Hiking in the High Uinta Mountains. The High Uinta Mountains offer 545 designated hiking trails accessible from 16 developed trailheads in Utah and Wyoming. Trails range from moderate to extreme, with altitude reaching 13,528 feet at the summit of Kings Peak. The north slope of the Uinta Wilderness area is generally accessed in Wyoming, while Utah is the access point for south slope recreation. Pay attention to all posted signs and trail markings. The Uintas represent a diverse range of ecosystems due to the topographic differences in elevations. Above the tree line, you’ll find tundra plant communities adapted to harsh weather condition of higher elevations. Below the tree line, forest land is thick with spruce, fir and lodgepole pines, interspersed with wetlands and meadows. Aspen groves provide a sharp and seasonally colorful contrast at the base of the Uinta Mountains.
